Phil Ivey has been referred to as the greatest poker contender in the world by quite a few of the top pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before reaching turning one. His grandfather taught Phil penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to learn every little thing he possibly could about the game. Phil would tell his grandparents that he was going to be a professional poker player. Phil did not let the adverse feedback from others annihilate his ambition of being one of the best poker competitors on the planet.
He started playing seriously after acquiring a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his skills at the casinos in Atlantic City. The first number of years for him were a teaching experience and coming away with a win wasn’t a regular thing at the time. He became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he achieved two final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the last table he defeated many of the well known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Phil credits his achievements to hard work and an immeasurable passion for the game of poker. Phil states that he’s picking up skills every day and is incredibly abashed about his accomplishments. He knows he makes blunders in each game of poker and constantly strives to improve.
Even though Phil has won some large tournaments, he favors destroying cash games on a normal basis.
