At first glance, poker seems to be a simple game like monopoly, scrabble, or computer games. When you really go deep into poker, you realize that it’s more than simply a game. Poker is a game of demoralization and only the strong will prevail. After you get the basic structure down for your game, controlling your feelings is the most important part in playing great poker. Anybody can learn the odds, starting hand requirements, and how to react in multiple hand situations. Only a small % of the poker playing population can hold their feelings when things are going bad. Gambling well after losing large pots is the thing that separates excellent players from average ones. Think about all the things you attempt in life that follows a familiar pattern. When you’re in a bad mood, you have trouble concentrating on everyday events. When you’re pissed, you have trouble thinking straight. As human beings, we are very emotional when it comes to life. Poker is a game that takes us through the various range of feelings. We have the highest highs after winning a big pot. We have the lowest lows when we lose a big pot.
Emotional control is an ability that can be mastered by any person. In any given sport, or game, emotional control is the ‘item’ that makes great players. Just like anything in the world, it takes a lot of discipline and experience to manage your emotions at the poker table.
