Phil Ivey has been referred to as the greatest poker competitor on the planet by quite a few of the top professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before reaching the age of one. His grandpa showed him to penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup everything he possibly could about poker. He routinely would tell his grandparents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil didn’t let the detrimental feedback from others annihilate his dream of becoming one of the greatest poker competitors in the world.
Phil started competing seriously after acquiring a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his abilities at the casinos of Atlantic City. The first number of years for Phil were a teaching experience and coming away with a win was not a regular outcome at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made 2 final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the last table he defeated many of the better known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his success to discipline and an eternal passion for the game of poker. He states that he’s picking up skills every day and is very abashed about his achievements. He knows he makes mistakes in each session of poker and constantly aspires to improve.
Despite the fact that Phil has come first in some big tournaments, he prefers winning cash games on a regular basis.
